CNN —Australian golfer Jason Day has caught the eye more for his attire at Augusta National this week than his play, and the world No. 21 revealed on Saturday that he was asked by tournament officials to stop wearing a particularly flashy top. But by the time he started his second round on the same day, he was no longer wearing that item of clothing. He told reporters after his third round that he had been asked to remove the flamboyant top. Explaining who had made the request, Day said: “It came from Augusta National.

Believe it or not, these are both sound bites from a golf tournament. A storm-delayed first round meant some players had to finish their first 18 holes Friday morning, exacerbating a grueling day. “Even the golf course was saying, ‘Get the hell out of here,’” Homa, chasing his first major, said. South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel clinched a two-shot victory at Augusta National in 2011, but crashed out after shooting 74 and 81. I have a chance to win the golf tournament,” Woods replied when asked by reporters what the milestone means to him.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele first competed at cards on the long flight to Australia for the Presidents Cup. Cantlay was solid as ever Saturday in the Genesis Invitational until a soft bogey toward the end of the round that effectively cut his lead in half. The final group is Cantlay and Schauffele, a pair of Californians who are now neighbors in Florida. Cantlay is trying to join Max Homa (2021) and John Merrick (2013) as players from the greater Los Angeles area trying to win what amounts to a hometown event. “Being from southern California, it's one of the tournaments on the list that I'd like to win the most,” Cantlay said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Patrick Cantlay began with an eagle and never let anyone close to him the rest of the round Friday. He shot a 6-under 65 to build a five-shot lead at the Genesis Invitational going into a weekend that won't include Tiger Woods. Woods made another early exit, this one because of flu symptoms instead of his injured body. Cantlay was making it tougher on the field with every birdie. The cut was at 1-over 143, eliminating Pebble Beach winner Wyndham Clark and Justin Thomas.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Thousands of fans watching Tiger Woods in his 2024 debut missed out on the best golf Thursday at the Genesis Invitational. In the group ahead of Woods was Patrick Cantlay, looking as though he wants to be the next Southern California native to win at Riviera. Cantlay opened with three birdies in four holes and never really slowed until a sycamore tree halted his great run. “Jordan and I were a bunch under on the front nine and a day where I putted really, really well. That shank was a shocker, and perhaps more concerning was Woods saying his back was acting up int the final hour, leading to the shank.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — It took only four rounds for Lydia Ko to put a dismal 2023 LPGA Tour season completely behind her. Ko, who finished at 14-under 274, won for the 20th time on the LPGA Tour. After 27 years, 15 major championships, 82 PGA Tour wins and hundreds of millions of dollars in endorsement contracts, Tiger Woods and Nike announced the end of their collaboration on Monday. With Woods marking the sportswear company’s “significant entry” into golf, the partnership – and its impact – was “seismic,” explained Ben Peppi, sports commercial expert at JMW Solicitors. “For a long time post-Michael Jordan’s retirement, pre-Cristiano Ronaldo, Tiger Woods was Nike,” Peppi told CNN Sport. "Tiger's voice and leadership throughout his career have contributed immeasurably to the success of the PGA Tour, and to apply both to our governance and go-forward plan at this crucial time is even more welcomed and impactful," said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. "I am honoured to represent the players of the PGA Tour," Woods, who is recovering from ankle surgery in April, said in a news release. The announcement comes nearly two months after the golf world was left stunned by the announcement of a framework agreement between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which controls LIV Golf. According to the PGA Tour, the players and Monahan will work together to amend the Policy Board's governing documents to make it clear that no major decision can be made without the involvement and approval of the player directors. It's just always bugged me but I was really proud of the way that I struck the ball today. Few of the thousands huddled under a sea of umbrellas would have tipped world number 26 Harman to win before the tournament. Likewise, Young, Rahm, Day and England's Tommy Fleetwood were all unable to hole the putts that would have at least asked some questions of Harman's nerve. But not even a Merseyside monsoon could rain on Harman's parade as he enjoyed a victory march down the last. Shubhankar Sharma tied for eighth place to post the best finish by an Indian at the British Open -- one of only 22 players to finish an attritional Open under par.

United States' Brian Harman celebrates on the 18th green after winning the British Open Golf Championships at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England, Sunday, July 23, 2023. Brian Harman turned back every challenge in the British Open, from big names to bad weather, and took his place among major champions Sunday with a victory that was never seriously in doubt at Royal Liverpool. He closed with a 1-under 70, making an 8-foot par putt on the last hole for a six-shot victory. Harman took the lead on Friday morning with the second of four straight birdies early in the second round. Harman drained a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-3 sixth, a 25-foot birdie putt on the next hole and he was on his way.

“You’d be foolish not to envision [winning], I’ve thought about winning majors for my whole entire life,” Harman told reporters. Merseyside-born and similarly chasing a long-awaited first major, Fleetwood has received vociferous crowd support all week – but home backing occasionally spilled over into rival attacking, according to his playing partner. He will pair with Harman when they tee off in as the final group Sunday at 2:15 p.m. BST (9:15 a.m. His eight-under 63 was the lowest round of the tournament so far and marked his career-low score at a major. Harman, seeking his first major title, dropped two shots in the first four holes before birdies at the fifth, ninth, 12th and 13th took him to 12 under par, five ahead of American Cameron Young and six clear of Rahm. The 36-year-old Harman, world number 26, showed great courage and composure after his shaky start, particularly as it happened just after Rahm had completed his round to ramp up the pressure. "The start was tough, I hit a couple of loose shots," Harman told a news conference. World number three Rahm conjured up eight birdies in a majestic display of ball-striking to give himself a chance to win his third major crown and second of the year. "That's the best round I've played on a links golf course ever," Rahm told reporters.

It may be the shortest hole on the course, but Royal Liverpool’s par-three 17th hole is already proving a tall order for some players at the 151st edition of the tournament. [1/5] May 14, 2023; McKinney, Texas, USA; Jason Day poses with the winner's trophy during the final round of the AT&T Byron Nelson golf tournament. It was the Australian's first win on the PGA Tour since the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship and his 13th in all since he won his maiden title, also at the Byron Nelson, in 2010. Since his last title win, Day has endured illness and injury as well as the pain of watching his mother's five-year battle with cancer, which ended when she died last year. The timing of the win could not be better with the PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in New York coming up later this week. Day won his only major title at the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in 2015.
CNN —Australian golfer Jason Day claimed his first PGA Tour victory for more than five years at the AT&T Byron Nelson in Texas, paying tribute to his late mother after the win. 1, Day has endured a challenging period in his career since he was last in the winner’s circle. It was his 13th victory on the PGA Tour, earning him $1.71 million. “For some reason, I just thought that I was going to win the tournament,” said Day, who claimed his first Tour win in the same event 13 years ago. “There’s still a lot of work that needs to be done with the swing, to the point where I want to take it,” Day said.
PGA Tour and LIV take feud to PGA Championship

ROCHESTER, New York, May 15 (Reuters) - The PGA Tour and LIV Golf take their feud to Oak Hill Country Club for the PGA Championship this week with the Saudi-bankrolled rebel circuit again seeking major validation. That was until world number one Spaniard Jon Rahm came to the PGA Tour's rescue, finishing top of the leaderboard to leave Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson runners-up. Like the Masters there will be 18 LIV members in the field led by twice PGA Championship winners Koepka and 52-year-old Mickelson and Australian Cameron Smith, who signed on with LIV after winning last year's British Open. Rahm and world number two Scottie Scheffler both are in top form coming into Rochester. Spieth, who withdrew from the Byron Nelson citing a left wrist injury, needs only a PGA Championship to join the elite club that includes, Woods, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus.
May 3 (Reuters) - A well-rested Jason Day will return to competition this week for the first time since enduring a horror finish to last month's Masters that the Australian revealed on Wednesday was due to another bout of vertigo. "So last round of the Masters I had vertigo, so that was obviously not fun to play in that final round," world number 34 Day told reporters ahead of this week's Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina. "We had to finish our third round Sunday morning and then I was sitting in the caddie hut and that's when I got vertigo." Day said he has not had "too many bouts" of vertigo since 2015 and that when it would return it would typically last for about three holes and then gradually get better. The Australian was even considered a contender going into the Masters given a return to form that had produced five top-10 finishes in seven events going into the year's first major.
"Yeah, I'm actually very disappointed with how I finished," said Day. "It feels good, but today kind of ruins it for me," Day said with a laugh. The highlight of Day's second round came at the par-four 11th where he missed the green with his approach shot but managed to chip in for birdie from 22 yards. Day said seeing his ball drop did not make him recall Larry Mize's miraculous chip-in on the same hole to defeat Australian Greg Norman in a playoff in the 1987 Masters. Koepka storms into Masters lead

Koepka, who shared the overnight lead with Norway's Viktor Hovland and Spain's Jon Rahm, returned a spotless five-under 67 to set a 12-under target for the afternoon wave that headed out under menacing skies. Resurgent Jason Day had looked poised to challenge Koepka until he stumbled to a double-bogey, bogey, par, bogey finish for a disappointing 72 that put the Australian in the clubhouse seven behind. While Rahm, winner of three events already this season, was always expected to contend at the year's first major, Koepka was not. "I just take it one shot at a time, one hole at a time, whatever I got in front of me," said Koepka. As Koepka was putting the finishing touches on his round, five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods was teeing off.
